One of the givens of caring for small children is that at some point they will get sick. Each day, there are more than 350,000 children under the age of 14 (with both parents working) who are too sick to attend school or child care. But many do attend child care. Children may pick up their illnesses elsewhere and first become symptomatic in child care or they may catch their illnesses while in child care. Children are more susceptible to illness in group care and some illnesses may be or become very serious, even life threatening. For these reasons, it is important that all child care programs, not just those specifically designed to care for mildly ill children, be prepared to handle this eventuality.
