Helping Haiti or Yourself?

How we remember, what we remember, and why we remember form the most personal map of our individuality.
-Christina Baldwin

The June 2010 issue of Psychology Today asked whether altruism is really just a way of helping yourself...

"January's earthquake in Haiti sparked enormous generosity worldwide.  Neuroscience research suggests that this outpouring of altruism occurred — at least in part — because helping others feels good.  For example, 'reward centers' in the brain are activated both by treating ourselves (with chocolate, for example) and by giving to others.  But if selfless and selfish activities are both pleasurable, is donating to charity any different to the brain than, say, getting a massage?  A new study from Caltech provides an answer.  When individuals give to charity, not only are reward areas activated, but so are areas involved in paying attention to the thoughts and emotions of other people.  Their interaction suggests that the pleasure that we feel when giving depends on thinking how others feel."

Running a successful Board of Directors isn't easy. It takes time, effort, and planning.  Staying on Course: The Early Childhood Board's Guide for Success will help them stay on course and focus on the important work they do for young children and their families, and it will alert them to pitfalls and known dangers as they navigate the early childhood landscape. In addition, when purchasing Staying on Course you receive free access to a Microsoft Word® version of 35 handouts, tools, and templates included in the book.

I convey my hearty sympathy to the people of Haiti and specially to the children of Haiti . If I could be the friend of the children of Haiti I would be
very pleased . I want to dedicate voluntary service to the children of Haiti

Thank you
