Innovations in e-Learning: Promising Practices

In a May 2004 article in Young Children, Chip Donohue & Roger Neugebauer identify eight trends tin the use of technology in early childhood training, continuing education and professional development:

1. Online certificates, credentials, and degree programs – online pathways to the CDA, AA, BA

2. Collaboration – higher education and business partnerships for improving and expanding opportunities

3. Community-based training programs – innovative uses of technology by CCR&Rs and professional development initiatives

4. International initiatives – making the world of ECE smaller through enhanced training and resources

5. Beyond courses – basic technology training for teachers and administrators and using technology to exchange ideas, information and resources

6. Guidelines for appropriate practices – defining best practices in online teaching and learning to guide course design, development and delivery

7. Faculty development – helping faculty and trainers gain technology skills to become more effective e-teachers

8. Policy discussions – defining the next steps including building the infrastructure and addressing issues of access, affordability, and quality

"The discussion is no longer about should technology be used but about how it can be used to enhance and expand training and professionals development opportunities for child care professionals."

"There are many next steps each of us can take to realize this goal, but what is most important is that we take them together by creating a community of online teachers and learners. As a field we have an opportunity to harness these new technology tools to make a real difference for the young children, parents and families in our care. We look forward to sharing the journey with you."
